Hearken Not

The 27th chapter of the book of Jeremiah is a record of the weeping prophet’s message to the inhabitants of Jerusalem to trust in the Almighty God. He is instructed by God to wear a wooden yoke which was symbolic of God’s punishment placed upon the rebellious nation in the form of the 70-year captivity. Jeremiah preached a message for the Israelites to surrender to Babylon. He said, “Break your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him and his people, and live” (27:12). Basically, if they gave up and allowed themselves to be carried into captivity, they would receive protection from God. If they remained in Jerusalem and gave ear to the false prophets and diviners, they would reap destruction. These diviners and false prophets spoke the words the Israelites wanted to hear. They said remain in the city for “Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon” (Jer. 27:9). Many sadly followed their message and suffered death and destruction by the hand of King Nebuchadnezzar. Today, we have our own diviners and prophets of death of whom many are giving ear to to the destruction of all. They are preaching messages of TOLERANCE. We are told to tolerate everything but intolerance. Yet, the Bible tells us to, “…Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good” (Rom. 2:9). We are being pressured to tolerate everything from the pro-choice agenda to gay marriage. We (and our children) are being taught that lifestyles and life choices such as these are positive and healthy in our modern society. But, friends, this is a message of death and destruction. This type of tolerance will lead to the breakdown of the moral fabric of society – the home. “Therefore hearken not unto the words of the prophets that speak unto you…for they prophesy a lie. For I have not sent them, saith the Lord…” – Jeremiah 27:14-15
