Be An Example

Learning By Example“Set an example for the believers…………..” (1 Timothy 4:12)

All radio stations and television stations carry a variety of commentaries expressing views on many different subjects, some of which are controversial to say the least. Stations are quick to point out that the views expressed do not necessarily represent the views of this station nor its management.

According to Tom Mullens, a very candid writer, “Teachers at Vacation Bible School are sometimes tempted to send children home with a note pinned on them which reads: ‘the opinions expressed by this child concerning God, the Bible, morality, things present and things to come, do not necessarily reflect those of the teacher or this church.’”

There is a lesson here for us! A challenge! Sometimes we probably need such a statement concerning us, or a disclaimer. After all, the only conception that many people have of God, the church, Christianity, etc, is derived by observing us. People usually believe what they can see. The average person on the street is a pragmatist. “Show me!” According to Paul, in 2 Corinthians 3:2, we are an “ epistle(or letter)….known and read by everybody.” The average person will read you more readily than the Bible.

A pointed question. Do the things I say, the way I say them, and the things I do properly represent God and the church? What about my attitude? My disposition? What about my faithfulness in service through the church?

The gospel is “good news.” We all preach the gospel each day with our life. What is the gospel according to you? May God help each of us to truly represent Him and His church.”
