The LORD Has Been Mindful of Me #3 – Psalm 8
In the previous articles, we have noticed that in the surrounding psalms, the Lord was mindful of the poor and righteous. He heard his cries and demonstrated His loving care and concern. Now in Psalm 8, David, the sweet singer of Israel, stands in awe and wonder at the attention that God pays to us as humans. As he looks up and stares out at the night sky, he marvels in amazement of the handiwork of God. As he considers the vastness and the details of the universe above him, he questions how such a Being as God could take notice of man-which in comparison to the stars and heavenly bodies, seems so small and insignificant.
This psalm is ultimately a hymn of praise-the psalm both opens and ends with praise. Within this praise, the psalmist reveals that humankind is not insignificant. God has taken notice of man and has endowed him with at least three special gifts that no other part of His creation possesses. We will consider the first of these today.
This first special gift is in regard to the distinct position that we occupy. According to the KJV, the psalmist states, “Thou has made him a little lower than the angels” (v. 5). The ASV says, “Thou hast made him but a little lower than God.” The word translated “angels” in the KJV and “God” in the ASV is the Hebrew word “Elohim.” What am I that God is mindful of me? In comparison with all that God has created, I have been placed in a unique position-you have been placed in a unique position. What a reason to praise the Lord our God!
