Psalm 8 – The LORD Has Been Mindful of Me #5
Not only have we been crowned with glory and honor and made kings, but we have been given a kingdom.
We have been put over the works of God’s creation (Psalm 8:6). In parallel lines, this verse says that first, we have been given dominion over God’s creation. In the second part, the psalmist says that all things of God’s creation have been put under mankind’s feet. The psalmist here looks to the physical realm and says that man is king in this domain (James 3:7).
Psalm 8:6 looks back to Genesis 1:26-28. It also looks forward and is applied to Christ-the ideal man in the New Testament (Hebrews 2:5-8; 1 Corinthians 15:27). Whereas David the psalmist speaks of our limited sovereignty over the physical realm, the New Testament applies this to Christ as the universal sovereign over all things, spiritual and physical.
What a thought though in terms of the question of “Who am I?” What dignity God has given to mankind! We are not (as the evolutionist contends) on the highest level of the supposed evolutionary scale. We are not just some higher form of animal. We have been given a place separate, apart and above God’s creation. David specifically applies our rulership to the realm of animals.
In light of this place of exaltation, we should remember that with great privilege comes great responsibility. As those with this dominion, may we exercise proper care and stewardship over God’s creatures.
