Kiss Your Mother With that Mouth?

Perhaps you’ve heard that question asked of someone that had something foul to say. It is a simple idea really – how can one express the kind of love reserved for the one that brought us into the world with the same mouth that uses profanity, gossips, lies or any other of a host of evil actions our tongue can carry out for us? James 3 asks the essentially the same question of us in verses 9 -10 when we praise the Father yet curse man.

James also compares our tongue to the bit in a horse’s mouth and a ship’s helm. These small items have the power to control and move and change the direction of something far more significant. How many times have the events of the world changed by a powerful speech, for better or for worse? How many times has a life been ruined by gossip? How many times have we disappointed a loved one with poorly chosen words?

Let us be those whose speech can be compared to the fountain that gives forth sweet water (v. 11) and glorify God through our example. Men that practice eloquent and thoughtful conversation have always earned the respect of men. What better way to demonstrate the richness of a life lived for the Lord?
