V.I.P.

One of the most encouraging and rewarding things about the Christian religion is the fact that it is extremely personal. As busy as he was, Jesus was never too busy for the individual. The gospel comes to us as individuals, as well as to the whole world. What difference does the individual make? God’s system is based upon the individual. Harry Emerson Fosdick once put it this way, “It is clearly true that in the long run, everything good or bad depends on the quality of individuals.”

The letters V.I.P. were made familiar during World War II. One given the rating of V.I. P. (“very important person) was given special priorities and attention. Every person is a V.I.P. in the eyes of God. One day Jesus put the whole world on one side of the scales and one soul on the other; the world flew up light as a feather when He said, “What is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul…” (Matt.26:26)

Napoleon Bonaparte wrote, after the battle of Bautzen, “I lost no one of importance.” Thousands of soldiers were lost in that battle, but “no one of importance,” according to Napoleon. Every individual is of infinite importance to God. Read, reread and be impressed by the stories of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal son in Luke 15.

We so readily categorize people according to their personalities, talents, positions, etc. Even when certain ones have been lost to the church, others have been overheard saying, “Well, he was not that important.” Yes he or she was, in the eyes of God.

Yes, every person is a V.I.P. to God, and should be given that rating by us. Only then will we be caught up in the true spirit of Christianity and have in us “the mind of Christ,” who took upon Himself the “form of a servant…..and became obedient to death…..”
