Sea Glass: An Example of How The Storms and Waves of Life Can Make Us Beautiful
My family and I enjoy going to the Outer Banks for our vacations every year, and one of the
souvenirs that my wife Ruth and our children like to try to find is sea glass. Sea glass is the result of glass items being thrown into the ocean, and after undergoing the storms and waves of the ocean, the glass pieces return to the shores as beautiful, colorful jewels that people love to use for jewelry, decoration, and the like. Some people that we have encountered in shops in the Outer Banks area refer to sea glass as the ocean’s gift back to man.
We as God’s children can be beautiful like the sea glass pieces when we allow ourselves to have the right attitude towards those storms and turbulent waves that come into our lives. In James 1:2-4, we read that we are to “count it all joy” when we are faced with trials and that through the trying of our faith, we will acquire patience which will enable us to be “perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” In Romans 5:2-5, we see the benefits of our tribulations in the working of patience and ultimately hope.
By acquiring the qualities that we can through undergoing the storms and trials of life, we too can shine and be lovely like the tumbled sea glass. We too can return unto God a portion of the great love that He showed for us.
