It’s Not a Choice! It’s a Human Life!
In our world today, we often hear the rationale for abortion as “it’s the woman’s right to choose, because it’s her body. It’s not a baby – just a mass or blob of fetal tissue.” Yet, what does God, our almighty Creator, have to say regarding such a practice and the status of an unborn child? Let’s turn to the Scriptures to find our answers.
In Exodus 21:22-23, we are told that if a woman with child is hurt and goes into labor due to the fighting of two men, a great price is to be paid. If the child dies as a result of the mother being harmed, the ultimate price is to be paid by the men – their very lives. Hence, in God’s eyes, the taking of the life of an unborn child is worthy of death.
In Proverbs 6:16-19, King Solomon lists the seven things that God hates. One of those things is “hands that shed innocent blood.” Is an unborn child innocent? Jesus said “Verily, I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 18:3). Therefore, it can be concluded that in God’s eyes, an unborn child is innocent, and those who take his life are shedding innocent blood.
In the first chapter of the book of Luke, we read how an angel came and appeared to Zacharias and told him that his wife Elisabeth would bear a son. It is interesting to note that the angel told Zacharias what his son’s name would be even before John was conceived (v.13) and that the baby John would be filled with the Holy Ghost, “even from his mother’s womb” (v.15). In addition, in Luke 1:41, Elisabeth’s unborn child, John, is described as leaping in her womb at the salutation of Mary, the woman chosen to be Jesus’ mother. From these verses, it seems logical to conclude that God recognizes the unborn child as a living being that is worthy of life.
In this upcoming presidential election, may remember the value of human life and may we keep these scriptures in mind and choose a candidate that is willing to protect the rights and life of the unborn. May God bless all of the unborn little ones.
