It’s Time for Dale Ridge Kid’s Day!
Tomorrow morning at 9.30 we may again enjoy the opportunity to gather at the Dale Ridge building to celebrate the final episode of this year’s “Kid’s Day” program. Throughout this year, God has continually blessed this new ministry with growth, active participation across all age groups, and a consistently large number of visitors. In fact, “Kid’s Day” has proven to be one of our most effective efforts to fellowship with brethren from sister congregations of the Lord’s church, as well as the community around us.
If you are still unfamiliar with “Kid’s Day”, you may ask “what is it?” – “what’s the big deal?” – “why do they keep doing it?” – “is it just an extension of VBS?” – “isn’t it just a Saturday morning play date for the kids?” – “just a bunch of puppets anyway, right?”
These are great questions, and a bit of history will be the best answer. “Dale Ridge Kid’s Day” began with an idea from my son Joseph as we were loading the car after helping clean up from VBS 2007. “Daddy, why do we have to wait another year to do something for the kids?” was his question. “We should have a Kid’s Day” was his suggested solution. The idea was presented to the elders, and “Kid’s Day” was born.
With five programs this year, we have attempted to select topics which either are not covered in very much detail during the normal Bible school curriculum, or bear further dedicated study. Topics that are particularly relevent in building a firm foundation of Biblical history, and concrete doctrine, to help ground a lifetime of Godly living. We began the year with a study of the Creation record, and now close with the life of the Apostle Peter. Along the way we have explored Babel, examined the Great Flood, and lessons from the prophet Daniel.
Yes, we have met some great puppet friends. Yes, we have made terrific crafts. Yes, we sing fun songs with the kids. And yes, we enjoy a nice meal for lunch. But the Bible is the heart of “Kid’s Day”, and always will be.
The teachers of the world have long understood that the best way to spread a false agenda, is to start young, and be patient. By the time the next generation is making their own choices, being a consumer, and voting, that false agenda will be accepted. Our public school system, media, and the “politically correct” left evidence this success. It’s time we take the same tact with all seriousness in the Lord’s church. If we do not firmly affix the accuracy, historicity, and inspiration of the Biblical record in our children’s (and our own) minds at every opportunity, we beg the world and minions of Satan to fill our minds, and hence pattern our lives, for us with disastrous results inevitable.
When we as adults study, teach, and join classes on these topics, we further clothe ourselves in the armour of God (Ephesians 6:13-15).
So what is the big deal about “Kid’s Day”? Well, here are a few facts:
- It is one more opportunity to gather together to study the Word, and as such it needs to be prioritized as a gathering of the saints, not to be missed – Hebrews 10:25.
- It is one more season to preach and teach the truth – 2 Timothy 4:2.
- It is a time to raise our voices in songs of praise and admonition – Ephesians 5:19.
“Kid’s Day” is for all ages; we have classes for everyone. It is everyone’s day. But it is service to our youngest Bible scholars – those most in need of our mentoring - that “Kid’s Day” is aimed. During the life of our Lord, some didn’t understand His insistence to have children surround him. We would do well to remember the answer of Jesus to the naysayers -
And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. Mark 10:13-15
In closing, early in the Kid’s Day program we wrote the “Kid’s Day Song” which says much about the heart of the work. Why do we do it? Why shall we continue to do it? Why will “Kid’s Day” grow? Why do we have big plans for Season Two in 2009? The song says it all:
The Dale Ridge Kid’s Day Song
(chorus)
Kid’s Day, Kid’s Day
It’s Dale Ridge Kid’s Day
Kid’s Day, Kid’s Day
It’s time for Dale Ridge Kid’s Day
verse 1
God loves you, and we do too
God loves you, and we do too
God loves you, and we do too
and that’s why we have Kid’s Day
(chorus)
verse 2
Read my Bible, every day
Read my Bible, every day
Read my Bible, every day
and that’s why we have Kid’s Day
(chorus)
