What Does The Bible Have To Say About The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA)?

The name “Freedom of Choice Act” sounds like an innocent concept; yet, when one researches it and finds out to what it pertains, he or she is soon convinced that it would allow for the uncontrolled slaughter of millions of unborn children.  Senator Barack Obama has stated that if he is elected president, signing the Freedom of Choice Act would be one of the first things that he would do.  Let’s take a look at what the Freedom of Choice Act would do if it is signed into law.

According to the National Right to Life website, the following prolife laws would be invalidated if FOCA (the abbreviation for Freedom of Choice Act) is put into effect:

  • Laws preventing partial-birth abortions
  • Laws restricting government funding of abortion
  • Laws requiring informed consent about fetal development and alternatives to abortion for girls and women considering abortion as well as a specified period of time (usually 24 to 48 hours) before the abortion is performed .
  • All laws allowing doctors, nurses, hospitals or other health-care providers to decline to provide or pay for abortions (doctors can presently refuse to perform abortions if they have a conscience problem with doing so).
  • All laws prohibiting medical personnel other than licensed physicians from performing abortions.
  • All laws protecting government officials who express any opposition to abortion.

We now turn our attention to what the Bible has to say about such legislation as the FOCA.

  • The Bible emphasizes the value of every human life (Genesis 9:6; Psalm 8:4-5; Psalm 139:13-16; Matthew 16:26).
  • The Bible teaches that life begins at conception (Genesis 25:22-23; Ruth 1:11; Exodus 21:22-23; 2 Kings 19:3; Job 3:3;  Ecclesiastes 12:7; Jeremiah 1:5; Zechariah 12:1; Luke 1:41, 44; Hebrews 12:9).
  • Note same word used for John the Baptist when conceived and after he was born (Luke 1:36; Luke 1:57).
  • Those proposing the FOCA speak of “viability of the fetus,” whereas up to 23 or 24 weeks, the “fetus” is not viable (that is, it cannot survive outside the womb and therefore is not considered a person); after 23 weeks, the abortionist determines viability, and the survival of the baby is determined by the “health” of the mother.
  • Under the Law of Moses, one would be put to death if responsible for causing a woman to terminate her pregnancy (Exodus 21:22-23).
  • Children (from conception) are an heritage and a blessing of the LORD (Psalm 127:3-5).
  •  We are to respect life, not kill innocent life (Exodus 23:7; Proverbs 6:16-17; see also Psalm 106:37-38).
  • A curse is upon those who slay the innocent (Deuteronomy 27:25).

We must remember that all those who have had an abortion or even who have performed an abortion can be forgiven by the blood of Christ and through obedience to the Gospel (I Peter 1:18-19; Hebrews 5:8-9).
