WHAT, LORD?

John Allen Chalk once wrote, “Man is a questioning creature. He probes, observes, inquires and reacts to everything around him. He is by nature the most inquisitive of all God’s creatures. If the Bible has anything to say to us, it is that man’s vital quests have never changed. That’s just part of the reason why the Bible continues to speak to those who ‘ask…seek…and knock,’ to use Jesus’ words in Matthew 7:7, 8’”

Men have admired for centuries the attitude of the apostle Paul (Saul) on the road to Damascus when he submissively inquired, “Lord, what would you have me do?”(NKJV) This was not idle curiosity either, as evidenced by the response of this disciple the remainder of his life.

Immediately following one’s recognition of his sinful state and need for a savior, like Saul this must be the attitude of heart-“Lord, what would you have me do?” Any sincere truth-seeker will not be left in the dark concerning the Lord’s answer, nor will he be hesitant in responding to the Lord’s instructions. In determining the answer to man’s most vital quest, one has but to go to the final instructions of Jesus recorded in Mark 16:15-16, and to the book of Acts where many examples of conversion are found, including Paul’s. (Acts 2:38-41: 8:12; 8:26-40; 16:31-34, 22;16) Again, one must approach these verses with the same spirit manifested by Saul on the road to Damascus. We do not seek the truth of God that we may consider it, but that we may obey it!

Would to God that every Christian had this spirit of submissiveness throughout his or her Christian life. The Christian who is sincerely and conscientiously seeking an answer to the question, “Lord, what do you want me to do,” in his or her growing Christian experience will have little or no difficulty in finding the answer sought.

We, as disciples(learners), must always be teachable, but, before that, we must have the spirit, or attitude, of a truth-seeker.
