We are What We Speak
Our youngest son, Elisha, who will be 2 at the end of January, is beginning to repeat every word that he hears. When he hears us say “Amen” at the end of a prayer, he repeats “Amen.” When he hears one of us calling for another member of the family, he calls out “Kaywa” (for his sister Kayla), “Bubba” (for his brother Channing), or “Honey” (for me). It is amazing how this little boy will imitate whatever he hears and makes those of us around him very conscious of the language that we use.
Along these same lines, we use words in our everyday interactions with people. We might ask ourselves, “If someone were to copy everything that we say, would we be proud of what he/she was repeating?” In James 3:5-10, we read of the power of the tongue and how from the same mouth, one cannot bless God and curse his fellow man. As Christians especially, we should be conscious of the verbal communication that we use with others. We should strive to use those words that would honor God and uplift those around us.
Food for thought: if Jesus were walking around with us, would our choice of language find His approval? Would he consider our communication that of bringing glory or shame to God?
