Random Acts of Kindness
You often see the bumper sticker “Perform random acts of kindness.” While I am not really a fan of bumper sticker sayings, this one is a concept that is worthy of consideration.
As Christians, we are to be kind and tenderhearted to one another (Ephesians 4:32). We are to live peaceably with all men (Romans 12:18). We are even to do good to our enemies (Romans 12:20-21). Therefore, we are to show kindness to all other human beings when possible.
We might wish to consider some ways in which we can express kindness to others that we encounter. Here is a brief list:
-
Invite someone to lunch or dinner unexpectedly
-
Leave money in a phone booth for someone who might not have a cell phone or money to use a pay phone
-
Send an unexpected card or e-mail to someone who needs encouragement
-
Listen to a stranger who needs someone to talk to
-
Smile at someone who might be having a bad day
-
Help someone clean up after a spill or pick up items that they may have dropped
-
Pay for someone’s gas before they get to the cashier
-
Send money anonymously to someone who is in need
-
Take food to someone who is sick, shut-in, or a neighbor
-
Volunteer at the hospital or somewhere else that people can use a kind word or gesture
May we always be kind to our fellow Christians as well as those who are in the world.
