Chariots of Fire

In our lives, we can be sure that eventually, dark times will come our way.  It may be the loss of a loved one, a life-threatening medical condition, the loss of employment or finances, the effects of a violent crime, or some other situation of that nature.  We may feel that we are all alone to face the circumstances of these tragic events; however, the Bible gives us a different picture for those that would serve God.

In II Kings 6, we read of how the king of Syria, being angered upon finding out that the prophet Elisha had told the king of Israel his plans, sent a great host as well as horses and chariots to bring back Elisha.  When Elisha’s servant saw this great host surrounding the city of Dothan where he and Elisha were, he asked his master, “Alas, my master!  how shall we do?” (v.15).

Elisha answered him by saying “Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them” (v. 16).  Elisha then prayed and asked God to open his servant’s eyes that he may see those who were protecting them.  We read how when the servant’s eyes were opened, he saw that the mountain round about Elisha was full of horses and chariots of fire.  We understand that these were armies of angels sent by God to protect Elisha.

Just as He was with and protected Elisha during his time of trouble, God takes care of us today.  He is with us during our darkest hour, and he provides a way of escape during our trials and times of temptation (I Cor 10:13).

May we always remember that God is there for us even in our moments of despair.
