What We Put Before Our Eyes
My family and I have started ordering different seasons of such shows as “The Waltons.” While this show is not perfect, it does teach good, moral lessons, and Ruth and I do not have to worry about any uncomfortable situations taking place, profanity being spoken, or any embarrassing scenes running across the screen as we watch television with our children. Whether we are willing to admit it or not, what we put before our eyes can influence us.
Some would ask, “What does the Bible have to say about television and the movies that we watch?” In Romans 1:26-31, Paul gives a listing of the type of ungodly activities in which the Romans were involved. In verse 32 of the same chapter, Paul states “who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.” Paul is saying here that those who find pleasure in watching others engage in godless behavior are worthy of death just as those who commit the behaviors. When we consider the content of some of the television shows that cross our television screens, could we be guilty of taking pleasure in the ungodly activities that are contained in them?
In Psalm 101:3, David expresses, “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.” When we watch television shows or movies that contain profanity, sexuality, extreme violence, or any other type of activity that God hates, are we not setting wicked things before our eyes? We would do well to listen to King David, for we all know of what happened to him when he allowed his eyes to wander.
As a final thought, let us consider this: would we allow the activities and actions that are shown in television shows and movies that we view to be performed in our home? Would we be accepting of profanity being spoken, murders being performed, or sexual acts being carried out in our dwelling place? We should be mindful of this when we choose television programs and movies to watch.
