Jesus’ Crown of Thorns

It is amazing sometimes how something small can bring to mind a monumental event. As Ruth and I were working in the backyard crown-of-thornstoday, Ruth pricked her finger on some thorns that I had cut off some of the brush in our yard. She was wearing gloves, but even through the gloves, she could feel the painful pricks that the thorns inflicted. I could not help but think of how Christ was forced to wear a crown of thorns when he was being tormented by the Roman soldiers as He was awaiting His crucifixion.

In Matthew 27:29-37 and in Mark 15:17-26, we read how the Roman soldiers put a scarlet robe and a crown of thorns on Christ and mocked him, and then, they removed the robe and put his own garments on him and took him and crucified him at Golgotha. One can only imagine how much pain that the crown of thorns caused Christ as the Roman soldiers pressed it into his head (of course, we know that he now wears the crown of His kingdom) as well as the excruciating pain that would have been endured as the nails were driven into Christ’s hands and feet.

The next time that you prick your finger on a thorn or have to drive a nail into an object, be reminded of the great sacrifice that Christ paid for us as He allowed Himself to be tormented and killed to pay the price for our sins. May we always be thankful to God for the great gift that He gave to us.
