Unshakable
Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. Hebrews 12: 26-27, Haggai 2:6
One day when the “earth and the heavens will be shaken,” only “what cannot be shaken will remain.” Here the “Hebrews” writer is speaking of the “seen” and the “unseen,” the “visible” and the “invisible,” the “temporary” and the “eternal.”
The writer continues, “Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.”
This is a spiritual kingdom that can never be shaken, a kingdom that will continue eternally in Heaven. “Then cometh the end, when he(Christ) shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down (Shaken) all rule and all authority and power..” 1 Corinthians 15: 24
Robert Browning wrote:
“Earth breaks up, time drops away; In flows Heaven, with its new day.”
One of the greatest promises God has given us was given while describing Heaven: “I am making everything new!“ Revelation 21: 5
We get excited about, and talk about, trips we are planning to take and the new experiences awaiting us. That’s natural, and there’s nothing wrong with that! But, we don’t seem to talk about Heaven very much, do we? Are we really that excited about going there. Do we really think about Heaven very much? This is the ultimate trip, the “prize I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3: 14
Randy Alcorn wrote,
“The more I learn about God, the more excited I get about Heaven. The more I learn about Heaven, the more excited I get about God.”
Heaven is not just a state of mind, but a real place! Notice these scriptures:
- “For I (Jesus) have come down from Heaven.” (John 6:38)
- “Look down from Heaven, your holy dwelling place…..” (Deut 26: 15)
- “There is a God in Heaven….” (Daniel 2: 28)
- “God is in Heaven.” (Ecclesiastes 5:2)
- “Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be Your name.” (Matthew 6: 9)
Here is ultimate reality. As C. S. Lewis once wrote, “All that is fully real is heavenly. For all that can be shaken will be shaken and only the unshakable remains.” The Christian, realizing the transitory nature of all things of this world, can look forward to something far better, lasting, unshakable, that “can never perish, spoil or fade.”
In the words of Tillet S. Teddlie:
“Earth holds no treasure but perish with using,
However precious they be;
Yet there is a country to which I am going;
Heaven holds all to me.”
