James wraps up his letter with some parting advice:
- a warning that rich people who got their fortunes at the expense of others will find themselves very sad.
- Having patience until the Lord returns is important. Consider the farmer that plants and waits and Job having to wait until the Lord revealed His plan for him.
- We are to simply let our words stand good on their own merits and not swear or take oaths
- Prayer from a righteous person is very powerful
- Keeping a wondering brother close

“So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘we are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’” (Luke 17: 10)
“Duty,” said Robert E. Lee, “is the most precious word in the English language.” Douglas MacArthur, another great military leader, summed up three great motivations for the soldier in his stirring speech, “Duty, Honor, Country.” Solomon gave this summation of life in Ecclesiastes 12: 13, “…Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.” We might well rephrase the title of MacArthur’s speech,
“Duty, Honor, God.”

Selfishness will cause problems among our brothers and with God, especially when it takes the form of praying for things for the wrong reason. Jesus taught that we cannot serve God and mammon (Matthew 6:24) and James picks up on that lesson here. We need to keep God in the front of our mind to help keep our priorities in check.
The tongue’s tendency to cause us problems is examined here again in the form of judging our brother.
