Mark 9 – The Transfiguration and The Greatest
Peter. James and John witness the transfiguration. In the troublesome days that lie ahead, this event was needed to affirm the faith of the disciples. The disciples have a hard time casting out a demon from a child and have to ask Jesus to assist them, then they counsel with him afterward as to why. Jesus again tells them of the coming crucifixion and the disciples would not ask what He meant. They did evidently understand enough to begin having a discussion of who would lead the group when He was gone. Jesus corrects them with two lessons, including using a child to demonstrate the required qualities in greatness. Mark finally lists a number of things that Jesus taught would cause us to fail to save our souls.
