So much of our life is built and broken by our tongue. The tongue is such a small part of our body but it can control us in the same way a rudder steers the ship. It can destroy the same way a match can burn down a forest. James warns us to take care to control the tongue. James addresses our tendency to size people up based on what they have or by what they look like. Reminding us that we are to love our neighbor as ourselves, James points out that breaking that rule is as bad as committing any other sin. He then once again addresses the need to show our faith through our works. Then, like today, Christians were claiming to be in a saved state by their belief but were not living the right kind of life.
