So much of our life is built and broken by our tongue. The tongue is such a small part of our body but it can control us in the same way a rudder steers the ship. It can destroy the same way a match can burn down a forest. James warns us to take care to control the tongue. The tongue is also guilty of bragging, “a lie that hides the truth.” We are to work toward the wisdom that comes from God and not the “wisdom” we …

James addresses our tendency to size people up based on what they have or by what they look like. Reminding us that we are to love our neighbor as ourselves, James points out that breaking that rule is as bad as committing any other sin. He then once again addresses the need to show our faith through our works. Then, like today, Christians were claiming to be in a saved state by their belief but were not living the right kind of life.

James writes a comforting letter knowing that Christians everywhere will be facing challenges to their faith. James urges us to face them and be glad for them as we’ll be strengthened by the things we face. In addition to having a gentle personality Christians are called to action, comparing faith without action to looking into a mirror and walking away and forgetting what they saw.
