Class Notes for Mark 13 (Pt 1): 5/19/10

  • Apocalyptic Language?
    • Parallel reading Matthew 24 and Luke 21
    • A co-mingling of prophesy about the destruction of the temple and Christ’s second coming
    • All three accounts are needed to get the complete picture
    • It is not apocalyptic due to the lack of discussion of Satan, evil forces or final judgment
    • Mark’s readers were on the brink of persecution and should offer hope
  • Jesus’ prophecy of the temple v1-2
    • The three parables were just told to the disciples and were still on their mind.
    • The parables could only point to Jerusalem
    • The temple had nearly 50 years labor in it
    • Blocks were 25x8x16 cubits weighing 1,200,000 lbs
    • Neither the Jews nor the Romans wanted the Temple destroyed
      • The Romans wanted it as a monument and Titus gave orders to spare it
      • Providential forces were at play
    • Why it was to be destroyed
      • It had served its purpose – the system it pertain to would be ended
      • No more sacrifices
      • It was in the way of the apostles themselves
      • All Israel loved the temple
      • It’s caretakers rejected the rightful heir
      • God’s symbol or removing the old and beginning anew
      • IT failed its highest purpose – to recognize the King
      • The Jews demanded Barabbas be released. Josephus recounts in depth how the robbers and thieves took charge before the Romans came
    • The destruction must have been magnificent
      • The gold inlay was melted and ran into the cracks and the solders tore it apart the ruins to retrieve it
      • A rebuild was attempted and the new stones were only 24×4
  • Disciples inquire about the timing v3-4
    • Mark leaves out the complete question in Matt 24:3
    • Three questions are asked and Jesus comingles the replies
    • He even answers in a way that is applicable to both the destr4uction of Jerusalem and His return
    • A first and second fulfillment
      • In the Garden, God declares that Adam will die and removes them from Eden. Adam lives for 930 years.
      • Hosea prophesied “Out of Egypt I will call my Son” Fulfilled twice by the deliverance from Egypt (11:1) and again when they that sought the young child’s life were dead (Matthew 2:18)
  • A special charge to the apostles v5-13
    • Human calamities were not to be read as a sign that He is returning
    • 9-13 addressed directly to the apostles
    • Inspiration of the Holy Spirit was only eve promised to Apostles
    • Acts records many of the fulfillments of these verses
    • Gospel Preached to all the world – First fulfillment by the Apostles – second fulfillment before Christ’s return
    • V11 is not guidance to go into the pulpit unprepared
