Class Notes for Mark 13 (Pt 2): 5/26/10
-
Signs of the destruction of the temple v14-23
- v14 Double application to the destruction of Jerusalem and of Christ’s return
- “Let him that read understand” Daniel 9:23-27 Chirst’s words, not Mark’s
-
The prophesy in Daniel pinpointed the date of the crucifixion.
- In the seventh year of Artaxerxes, Ezra and his companions left Babylon and came to Jerusalem (for the purpose of rebuilding it, with the undeniable implication that the king had given such an order). That was in B.C. 458. Starting with this date, the end of the 490 years is A.D. 32, and the end of the 69 weeks (equivalent to 483 years) is A.D. 25
- This puts the ministry at about 27.5 AD ( Mid week) and the crucifixion at about 30AD
-
abomination of desolation
- Within – the Jews
-
Without – The Romans
- Roman General Titus inexplicably stopped the siege (Josephus)
- The Christians escaped into the mountains
- V21,22,23 Apply both to the end and to the destruction of Jerusalem.
-
Prophesy of the end v24-27
- After THAT tribulation as opposed to THE tribulation
-
A lesson from the fig tree (v28-29)
- The new green leaves of the tree signify the summer
-
The events described in previous verses signal the coming of both the destruction and of the second coming
- The description of both does not mean they occurred simultaneously.
- The second coming is nigh at all times.
-
This generation shall not pass before accomplishment (v30-32)
-
Dual meaning of generation
- Those living at a specific point in time
- A particular strain of people (Jewish)
- Words shall not pass away – Even with man trying to destroy them
-
-
Exhortation to watchfulness (v33-37)
- Reference the three parables in Mark 12, Matthew 25
- Nothing here is to be taken as a promise that the return was going to happen during their lifetime.
- The problems with the world regarding faith and belief were always there and will be till the end – so Watch!
