Whatever the gift of “speaking in tongues” was, it was clearly either being faked or misused by many in Corinth. Paul lists it last among the gifts (chapter 12) yet it seemed to be the most desired. The emphasis is to be on teaching and not the public display of speaking in tongues that served no purpose but unto one’s self.

Chapters 12-14 deal with Corinth’s misuse and misunderstanding of Spiritual gifts. Spiritual gifts, some natural some supernatural, were given to members of the church to teach the gospel while the body of the New Testament was being written. Instead of working together with the various gifts as intended, some were being prized above others. The members of the church are to function together as a team just as the members of the body work together as a system.

Paul lists several examples of how the children of Israel failed to avoid temptations did not receive their reward. We are to take our religion seriously just as Paul had just described himself as doing in the previous chapter.
Paul returns to the subject of eating meat sacrificed to idols. They were to avoid eating it if they were told it was idol meat, but that there is no need to ask when purchasing it in the market.
