This is a quick note most likely to a congregation assuming “elect lady” is being used in a metaphorical sense. The emphasis is on truth and to beware of false teachers that were spreading their doctrine in the name of the apostles. We are not to treat these kinds of teachers with hospitality or otherwise encourage them. Verse 9 is key here – Failing to abide in Christ’s teachings separates us from God.
