Jesus’ priesthood is compared to Melchizedek’s rather than the tribe of Levi. Melchizedek is mentioned in Gen 14:18-20. He was king of Salem and priest of God Most High – A king and a priest. The Levitical priesthood was temporary – they obtained the role merely because of being born into the tribe. The sacrifices of the Levites could not remove sin and they had to repeat the sacrifices. Christ sacrificed once and for eternity.
