History of the Dale Ridge church of Christ

About 38 years ago a group of families left the Brandon Ave. church (with the approval and financial support of that once sound and solid congregation). They met at their current location as the West Side Church of Christ in Salem, VA on Aug 27, 1967. In 1975, a handful of families from Westside left under their approval and financial support to begin the Lake Drive congregation in Vinton, VA. From the combination of these two thriving works, the urgency was seen to begin the work at Dale Ridge.

A group of about 20 began meeting at its present location on Sunday, May 3, 1989. Before this, much planning took place. The land was purchased with the help of Brother Johnny Mac Young who was one of the elders that time at the Florence Alabama Church of Christ and has now passed on to his reward. The Florence Alabama Church of Christ provided the necessary funds to acquire the land. Brother Curtis Doss and others went on a search venture to find the land. They eventually found the present very scenic 7 acre plot of land on what was then highway 604 (now Cloverdale Rd). They even named the location “Dale Ridge” (a combination of Daleville and Blue Ridge).

The location is a great spot to have a church building. The traffic count is about 50,000 cars a day. It’s a great place for people to assemble to worship in the Roanoke Valley.

The elders in the congregation in Florence Alabama provided the funds also for the 1st phase of the building and for the first few years of a preacher’s salary. Brother Lynn Parker moved to Roanoke to begin the work at Dale Ridge in 1988. After just a few months, he and his family Mary Ann and their two sons, Timothy and Darwin, were worshipping with a small group in a store front building near Boxely Hills on Williamson Rd. The 1st phase was erected and people were needed to fill it. Brother Lynn Parker went to the elders at West Side and Lake Drive to get names of those who had drifted away from the faith, and in just a short time those names were turned into restored Christians. Eventually, many were baptized, and converts were added. Soon, the congregation became self-supporting and in just about 18 months, the original building was overflowing with about 60 or better in attendance.

From 1991-97, Brother Tracy Dugger and his wife Julie came to work with the church. At this time, the 2nd phase of the building was underway. In April 1998, the church began meeting in the new auditorium. It was at this time that Brother Michael Carter and his wife Ruth began to work with the Dale Ridge congregation.

In 2003, elders were selected to oversee the work. Deacons were as well selected to fulfill much needed areas of work in fulfilling the mission Christ (Matthew 28:18-20). Today, Dale Ridge is thriving with over 100 in attendance and is working toward further growth and the 3rd phase of its building program.
