The Final Debate

These days America is filled with talk of debate.  Presidential debates, Vice Presidential debates, debates concerning the economy, the list goes on and on.  Periodically in our culture, there seems to be an ebb and flow of interest in debate.

One topic in which interest rarely seems to die is the debate of religion.  “Do we really need religion any more?” some will ask.  “Why bother?” others will add.  “We have grown beyond superstition” the self-proclaimed enlightened teach.

An opposite view is also voiced.  Safety net religion comes into play as “well, why not?”  Or, “just in case, I

Remember Them Which Have the Rule…

Through the pen of the inspired apostle Paul we understand that the church is the body of Christ (Ephesians 1:22-23), composed of many members (1 Cor 12:12), each having different abilities and responsibilities (Ephesians 4:11), all of which are given by God for the purpose of ministry.

With many works, and many workers, it may seem natural that some are more honored than others.  It is also true that those often honored, are equally as often dishonored.   But the ways of man are not the ways of God, and our wisdom is not His (1 Corinthians 1:25).

An Overdose Problem?

Last Friday, we examined the need to make Time for the Gospel.  During that study, several examples of both good, and bad, attitudes towards our prioritization of time were offered for our contemplation.  This week, we shall evaluate the problem of overdose.

Time for the Gospel

Of the many inspiring examples to arise from what is most often called the ”American Restoration Movement”, one of my favorites is an episode from the life of “Raccoon” John Smith.  A mighty preacher of the Gospel, Smith was most active through frontier Tennessee and Kentucky.  I was first introduced to this event through V. Glenn McCoy’s Return to the Old Paths wonderful volume of Restoration history.

The year is 1824.  Upon hearing that brother Alexander Campbell would be preaching in Flemingsburg Kentucky, “Raccoon” John – then affiliated with the Baptist denomination - set out to hear the man of whom so much was being …

All You Need is Love?

On 25 June, 1967 the Beatles debuted what would become the world famous anthem “All You Need Is Love” , written specifically for the BBC television special “One World”.  Beatles lore holds that John Lennon had written the song specifically for the program two weeks prior to the live broadcast.  Aired simultaneously in 26 countries, 400 million viewers eagerly tuned in.  When asked about his inspiration, Lennon reportedly said he chose the one word that could be easily understood in every language.  Love.

All You Need Is Love has since become a cure all mantra for most any difficulty which one might face.  The …
