Spiritual Meltdown
It was just another day in 1979 for the thousands of Americans living in the suburbs of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Yet, that day would mark the worst commercial nuclear disaster in America, at the Three Miles Island power plant. The trouble began when coolant water was accidentally mixed with superheated steam, causing the plant’s turbine to stop operating. Pressure then began to build, sending radioactive water pouring into the containment building, instead of cooling the reactor. The emergency cooling switch for the reactor was turned on, only to be turned off again in the belief that the accident was very minor.…
