Refining the Impurities

When it comes to preaching, I am personally all for “feel good” sermons.  The Bible certainly provides ample material for messages that are able to inspire, comfort, build up, give hope, and yes, make us feel good inside.

Most of us struggle with many issues that affect us mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.  This, in effect, can have a physical bearing upon us as well.  The Bible is filled with promises and messages of hope and can offer to us that peace that passeth understanding (Philippians 4:7).

“. . . That the World May Believe That Thou Hath Sent Me” – John 17:21

Legrand Richards (pictured here in the center), in his Mormon missionary manual entitled “A Marvelous Work and a Wonder” (one of the few books that Mormon missionaries are allowed to read during their two-year period of missionary work), begins his work by attempting to show serious problems with the Scriptures.  Richards, a former apostle of the Mormon Church, looks at the division that exists throughout the world of “Christianity” and comments, “The number of these churches is evidence of how impossible it is to agree upon the teachings of the Bible when left to the wisdom of man

The Elements of the Lord’s Supper

In regard to the institution of the Lord’s Supper, the Bible says, “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said. Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; for this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins” (Matthew 26:26-28).

In instituting this memorial feast, Jesus set apart two simple elements and described their individual representative meanings.

Misuse Of Matthew 5:17

There are some that, for one reason or another, will attempt to bind an Old Testament law to us and they will often use Matthew 5:17 to do so. It is remarkable that this is so because we can see in Hebrews 8:7-13 where the writer has been inspired to remind us that the old covanant “waxeth aged” and “is nigh unto vanishing away.” Further, Paul reminds us in Galatians 5:2-4 that if we choose to follow any of the old law then we must follow the whole old law. Considering some of the laws the Jews were required to …

Judge Not According To Appearance

Does a person’s outward appearance necessarily always indicate who they are on the inside?  On the one hand, what a person wears does say something about a person.  When you see a person in military uniform at the local mall, you immediately know that person is in the armed forces, and you can tell almost immediately in what particular military branch they serve.  Furthermore, the way people generally dress who live in an urban area as opposed to the attire of those who live in smaller country towns is quite different and says something about
