Notes on the Disciples

Mark 6:7-13 Luke 9:1-6 Matthew 10

  • Jesus came to die for our sins and needed trusted individuals to carry the message out.
  • The possibility is that they were sent out as part of their training and practice.
  • Jesus needed to announce his arrival later He sent the seventy out.
  • The disciples thought they were going to be setting up some kind of new political nation and mostly thought so until Acts 1
  • They needed miracles and the transfiguration to develop an understanding of what was really happening
  • Jesus kept them in wonderment by teaching through parables and veiled sayings

Basic Timeline

  • John 1:35-51 John, Andrew, Simon and Philip were believers at John’s baptizing. Followed Him to Cana and then returned to their work for about a year.
  • After the Judean ministry and at the beginning of the Galilean ministry he calls Simon, Andrew, James and John to leave their fishing business and follow Him Mark 1:16-20
  • Matthew was asked to join shortly after Mathew 9:9
  • The twelve were formally chosen Luke 6:12-16
  • Given the power to heal and sent out for about a month or so (Matthew 10)
    • Be wise as serpents, harmless as doves
    • Expect hardship
    • Trust in God’s care
    • Some instructions temporary like “Take no money” Luke 22:35-38
  • Final commission to carry out the Gospel Matthew 28:16-20
